Lobster Village small and lovely town: Sugnai Rengit Town in Pengerang (PART 1)

27th december 2014

2nd post!!!!!!! Hahahah debuting my “virgin” blog post hehe pardon the English here ><.  The last time I went on a boat trip to overseas was to Indonesia and now after around 15 years here I am again at Changi Ferry Terminal (CFT) ready to go to my friend’s hometown Pengerang. Haha to be honest I have never heard of this place in my life before until my friend told me about it.

Met with 4 other university friends at Changi Ferry Terminal early in the morning at 9am, as my friend told me that we need to be early to avoid the crowd. Once at CFT we waited for the bum boat to Pengerang. Sadly we were told that we need to wait for the whole boat to be full before the boat can set off. There are 2 type of boat that we can “choose” to take the fibre boat which cost 13 dollar per pax and the wooden bumboat which cost 11 dollar per pax. The main difference between these 2 boats is that the fibre boat only require 35 mins to reach Pengerang from Changi while the latter requires 75 mins to each Pengerang. Haha the “choose” was written in such a way as obviously we were not given a choice we could only take whichever boat that was available. Unfortunately we got the wooden bumboat, oh well at least we didn’t need to wait so long for 12 people to fill up the boat.
Finally we board the boat!!! With some catching up to do the 75 minutes passed faster than we thought.

Passed through the custom and saw some taxi drivers waiting to pick passengers up so we hop on to 2 separate taxis and set off to my friend’s grandma grocery store. Through the taxi ride there was not much of a scenery, as from what we heard Malaysia are developing the village into a oil state whereby the company Petronas is developing it. Hence slowly they are forcing out the villagers to relocate to Johor Bahru(JB). It’s very sad to see our culture slowly being written over by modernization. Nonetheless we reached our friend’s grandma grocery stall and something to note the GUANYIN temple beside it according to my friend is quite famous so if you visit Sugnai Rengit Town just tell the taxi driver to stop by the famous Guanyin temple and alight for a moment to pray for some blessings. Sadly I did not take picture of the temple L

Next after some praying we proceed on to travel to the main town Sugnai Rengit Town (SGT). According to estimation the cab ride from the ferry terminal to SGT is around 30rm. If you are lucky enough they may even ferry 5 people per ride (but beware of local police).

Once we reach the town we went to put our barang barang( belongings) at my friend’s house and our day food adventure begins!!!!! We walked around and we saw a huge (aluminum) statue of a large lobster as the mascot of the state. No one wanted to take picture with it as they say it is ugly only I think it looks cool hahah remind me of transformer.

Next we proceed on to walk ard to hunt for food. My friend bought us to a laska stall which sells Malaysia style laska (RM4.50).  However it was not to my liking as I prefer either laska which has a lot of coconut milk or spicy laska, and sadly the laksa was neither.

Next we ordered a big bowl of mango ice (RM 3.00) to share. The serving was quite large and enough for the 5 of us to share around. However it was quite disappointing as the shaved ice was quite rough for the texture and more than half of it was just unflavoured ice. But I must say the top half of the ice was quite nice as the mango were fresh and the condensed milk was not very sweet. *** note the stall is located at some small alley and there was no signboard***

Next we my friend recommended us to go eat the only fast food restaurany in the area MarryBrown, located at Jalan Besar, Sungai Rengit, 81620 Pengerang Johor. It is similar to KFC as they sell fried chicken too. Hence the five of us ordered a 5 piece combo meal which cost around 32RM to share as we do not want to be too full. Did not take picture of the chicken as everyone ate too fast due to hungriness, but it was just like normal fried chicken. The taste of the skin was not fantastic or rather to say it was below average. However the meat inside was juicy and succulent, hence for people who do not wanna eat the fattening skin MarryBrown is just the place for you. However the fries were also mediocre.

Next we wanted to eat seafood for lunch as Pengerang is well known for its seafood especially lobster (HAHA as their state mascot is a huge lobster). Previously my other friends who have been here went to Jade Garden Seafood Corner which was the most famous seafood restaurant in the area. However they relocated to another place just behind the local primary school. However my friend warned us that even though the seafood there is as fresh and delicious the price tag coming with it is quite heavy. The price is comparable to Singapore seafood price zzzzzz.(Might as well eat in Singapore) He recommended Restoran You Kees as it is more famous among the locals with a cheaper price tag as compared to Jade Garden.  Before we went in as my friend knew the lady boss of the restaurant, the lady boss asked us to come back awhile later as there will be some tour bus arriving brining people to eat there. Confused we asked the reason why, she said the food will not be as nice as they will be serving large number of customers. ***therefore take note try to avoid weekends lunch period or dinner period*** Therefore we went back around 1 hr later and started ordering.
While waiting for the food to come I went around looking at the banners of the restaurant surprisingly Singapore channel U have came here before to interview the shop and recommend their food on television. (hmm I wonder how I missed out that hehehe as I love to watch television) Celebrities such as Zoe Tay, Guoliang, LiTeng and many more others have been here too. Next I walked around taking photos of the live seafood in the shop.

 LOBSTERSSSSSS YUMYUM HEHEHEHE

I think I ate this once before in china the meat was sweet and juicy however we did not order this. According to the boss it costs 28RM per sea mantis.
Finally the food starts to slowly arrive.

The appetizer comes on first it was the local prawn crackers. Haha everyone chiong for the prawn crackers as we were hungry again even though we ate so much just now.

Next one of my favourite dishes in Singapore Tze Char stall. However this was a huge disappointment L The hotplate toufu was not even sizzling when bought to our table furthermore it was practically tasteless. It was so tasteless that all five of us agreed that it was bad. There is the broccoli too which we ordered, this was much nicer as it was stir fried in butter and the aroma of the butter fused perfectly with the broccoli itself.

Hotplate ostrich meat!!!!! I am quite excited about this dish as I have never tried ostrich meat before. I heard from my friend there is an ostrich farm nearby however due to the rain we were not able to visit it. The sizzling of the meat could be heard even when the dish was being bought over from the kitchen( not exaggerating at all). The smell was heavenly however the downside was that the juice of the meat splattered all over hence we had to keep a distance away from it before we started eating. The meat was very tender and the smell of the onion drifted all over the place as the dish continue to sizzle. **take note do not leave the meat stuck onto the hotplate for too long or it will become chaota***

Next coincidentally the seafood get served simultaneously together. First up stir fried lala (Clam) in chilli. Haha I never understood why people call clam lala but I just followed and lala sounds cool though. The sauce of the clam was perfect!!!!! I think if I eat the sauce just with white rice I can eat up to 5 bowls of it (even though I have a large appetite ><) However the meat of the clam has all fallen out from its shell. My friend keep removing empty shell after empty shell. But guess what we found after removing the empty shells. THE CLAM MEATTTTTT!!!! Haha even though it is small but the freshness of the clam was what kept us going (even though removing the shells were not a tiring chore :P) But overall it was the sauce that was nice I must admit that it made the clam the supporting role instead of its original lead role.

Comeon if you dun order chilli crab when eating seafood it’s a definite nono for a Singaporean haha (no la kidding) the piping hot chilling crab was served!!! But the presentation was nt very nice hence we had to shift the shells around hahahah. However the crab was also another disappointment…. The 2 crabs were quite small of a serving and the meat was literally minimalL There wasn’t enough meat to get a taste of the crab furthermore the sauce is not as good as the ones in Singapore. The only saving grace was the mantou we ordered to dip into the sauce. Did not take picture of the mantou as I thought the main lead was the crab. However the mantou was soft and fluffy on the inside and hot and crisp on the outside!!! Niceeeee!

Finally the lead of the whole meal: BUTTER LOBSTER This is one of their signature dish. All of us were quite excited as we seldom eat lobster in Singapore due the expensive price tag. There were around 8 small pieces of lobster which makes up 4 whole lobsters. Each lobster is being deep fried to golden brown and after that being stir fried with butter. The lobsters are golden brown and the aroma of the butter instantly gushed into our nose. The taste of the lobster was superb not only was it fresh the meat coated with the butter instantly melts in my mouth ( HAHA exaggerating here) but it was real good I must admit hahaha. ****However please take note do not leave it to cool to eat or it will start to feel oily and you may get sick of it!****

Finally most importantly the PRICE TAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG It all came up to about 74RM (SGD28.24) per pax so for the five of us it is around 370RM (SGD141.22). Both the crab and the lobsters cost 130RM (around SGD50) each. This price tag if you compare it to Singapore one this is definitely quite the catch as in Singapore the lobster would have been around SGD 100 given the amount. ******HOWEVER another small little tip if you go around may or june it would have been cheaper according to the locals haha***

PART 2 will be up soon dinner supper and breakfast hehehehe food food everywhere yum yum :)
